I'm a big believer in the importance of recycling, and even my brochures are made from 100% post consumer waste. I think Fayetteville's recycling program is one of the best, but there is always room for improvement. The City does not recycle much of anything from apartments, businesses, or industry. It's not that we don't want to, but decades-old decisions have locked us into a collection system that is hard to adapt and expand.
The city as hired a consultant to evaluate and recommend changes to our recycling program. I will actively work with the City's hired consultant to help expand our services to handle more types of waste for both businesses and households. If a public-private partnership presented itself to accomplish this expansion, I would only support it if assurances could be obtained to protect us from unfair rate hikes.
If we can start collection industrial and construction waste, we can maximize our recycling capacity and increase our stream of revenue.
